Andrew D. Taylor
Andrew D. Taylor is the Director of Operations and Scientific Strategy at the McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health, Program on Life Sciences, Ethics and Policy at the University Health Network and University of Toronto. Mr. Taylor is a graduate of the University of Toronto where he completed a M.Sc. degree in 2005. For his thesis project, Mr. Taylor interviewed 32 health and environmental biotechnology companies across Canada to understand their barriers and needs in the commercialization of products in emerging and developing country markets. Mr. Taylor recently published a commentary article in Nature Biotechnology and presented his thesis to both federal and provincial government departments, including Canada’s National Science Advisor. Mr. Taylor has published 8 research articles.
For the past 2 years as the Director of Operations and Scientific Strategy, Mr. Taylor has worked closely with Dr. Peter Singer and Dr. Abdallah Daar in the development, implementation and operations of two large-scale grants (Genome Canada through the Ontario Genomics Institute and the Grand Challenges in Global Health Initiative through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) totaling $22M over 5 years.
As the Director of Operations, Mr. Taylor and his operations team is responsible for the day to day activities of the Program on Life Sciences, Ethics and Policy – a program of 40 employees made up of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research associates, research assistants with research activities throughout the developing world. As the Director of Scientific Strategy, Mr. Taylor is involved with the development and implementation of research strategies across specific projects, 14 research grants and the McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health. This includes the development and submission of research grant proposals.
Before joining the program, Mr. Taylor worked for a biotechnology company in London, England within their sales, marketing and business development departments, and finished his undergraduate studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong where he studied Mandarin, Chinese culture and China's biotechnology Industry.
